Each year in the early weeks of Lent, we take a trip to Sweetwater Creek State Park for a time of hiking. The hike provides a different setting for us to meditate on what we hope our Lenten journey will be. The steep hills, flat places, and rambling river serve as inspirational metaphors.
And then there is Eucharist: We find the flattest rock and gather around the Holy Table. The sound of children playing in the nearby creek and the chatter of lovers hiking along the path simply serve as a unique background for what we are remembering and celebrating there on that rock.
